The Gorontalo Provincial Government has just launched the official Gorontalo Geopark website, which contains detailed information on geopark sites in Gorontalo City, Gorontalo Regency, Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo Utara Regency, and Boalemo Regency.
Gorontalo is situated in the North Arm of Sulawesi, which is a volcanic arc formed by the North Sulawesi Subduction and the East Sangihe Subduction. Gorontalo Geopark is now administered by the Regional Planning Agency (BAPPEDA) of Gorontalo Province in cooperation with Gorontalo City, Gorontalo Regency, North Gorontalo Regency, Bone-Bolango Regency, and Boalemo Regency.
This is one of the significant achievements of the members of the SRIREP project’s transdisciplinary research and practice. Prof. Dr. Masayuki Sakakibara, the project leader of the SRIREP Project, Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN), Kyoto, Japan, Dr. Hisanari Sugawara, the Curator of Gunma Museum of Natural History, Study on Community Management of Global Geopark, Dr. Sc. Yayu Indriati Arifin, M.Si, Geodiversity Researcher, and Ms. Intan Noviantari Manyoe, S.Si., M.T., Geodiversity Researcher/Gorontalo Geopark of the State University of Gorontalo are heavily involved in collaboration with the key stakeholders, particularly the officials of Gorontalo Provincial Government, such as the Regional Planning Agency (BAPPEDA) of Gorontalo Province, the Regional Research Council of Gorontalo Province, and the Tourism Office of Gorontalo Province, etc., as well as the scientists and researchers of the State University, etc., and local communities since 2019.
A Geopark is an integrated region that is at the forefront of protecting and utilizing geological heritage in a sustainable manner and promoting the economic well-being of its inhabitants.
